Data collection
Data collection refers to the systematic gathering and recording of information from various sources for further processing, analysis, or storage. Data can be collected manually or automatically using sensors, measuring devices, scanners, and digital systems.
In logistics, data collection is essential for monitoring and optimizing processes throughout the supply chain. Accurate information on dimensions, weight, volume, and product identification supports inventory management, storage allocation, shipping, and transport planning. Automated data collection reduces manual effort, minimizes errors, and ensures reliable information for connected IT systems.
Practical example:
In a distribution center, an automated measuring system collects the dimensions, weight, and barcode information of incoming parcels. The recorded data is transferred to the warehouse management system and used for storage allocation, freight calculation, and further logistics processes.
