A loading unit consists of individual goods, packages, or load carriers grouped together for transportation, storage, or handling purposes. It simplifies handling and enables efficient management of logistics processes.

A loading unit can consist, for example, of a pallet with several cartons, a container, or a bundled package of goods. Grouping individual goods together facilitates transportation, storage, and transshipment. In automated logistics processes, loading units are often identified, measured, and weighed to provide data for inventory management, transportation planning, and freight billing. Standardized loading units improve efficiency throughout the entire supply chain.

Practical example:

A Euro pallet loaded with cartons is recorded as a single loading unit, automatically measured, and stored in the logistics system along with the associated transport data.
