Freight volume

Freight volume describes the spatial dimensions of a shipment or cargo and indicates how much space it occupies within a vehicle or loading unit. It is a key metric for planning, calculating, and optimizing transportation processes.

In logistics, freight volume is used to plan transportation capacity, optimize vehicle utilization, and make efficient use of cargo space. It is often determined using automated measurement systems that record the dimensions of packages, pallets, or other loading units. In conjunction with weight data, DWS systems, and transportation management systems, freight volume supports precise planning and billing of transportation services.

Practical example:

A logistics service provider automatically records the freight volume of several pallets to make optimal use of a transport vehicle’s available loading capacity.
