Volume freight refers to shipments for which the billing basis is not solely the actual weight, due to their large volume and low weight. Instead, the transport volume occupied is taken into account using a calculated volumetric weight.

Volume freight plays an important role, particularly in the air freight, general cargo, and CEP sectors, as high-volume shipments take up limited cargo space. To determine this, a shipment’s dimensions are recorded and converted into a weight used for billing purposes using a volumetric factor. Automatic dimensioning systems and DWS (Dimensioning and Weighing System) equipment provide precise measurement data for this purpose and support accurate freight billing.

Practical example:

A lightweight but large cardboard box is measured automatically. Based on the dimensions, the system calculates the volumetric weight, which is used to determine shipping costs.
