3D point cloud
3D point cloud refers to a digital representation of an object or environment consisting of a large number of spatially captured measurement points. Each point contains positional information in three-dimensional space and, together with other points, maps the geometric structure of an object.
3D point clouds are generated, for example, by LiDAR sensors, laser scanners, or 3D cameras and are used for the precise capture of contours and dimensions. In logistics, they enable the analysis of loading units, pallets, and packages for applications such as automated measurement and contour inspection. The resulting 3D data supports digital processes, quality inspections, and the reliable control of automated workflows.
Practical example:
A measurement system creates a 3D point cloud of a pallet to automatically detect protrusions, irregular contours, and the actual dimensions.
